WebI was having this issue too, but I might have discovered something. I think it's an issue with the opening movie sequence. I'm about to reach chapter 3 and so far it's been saving just fine. My son has a save game as well and it works. You just have to start the game, get past the opening movie, save it, quit and then open the save file.
